USPS suspends service in the DC region

Wed, 02/10/2010

"The Postal Service is suspending delivery and collections throughout the region due to the storm."

That announcement from USPS Spokesperson Deborah Yackley.

Since the decision affects only delivery and collections for all of Maryland, Washington DC, Northern Virginia down to Richmond and west to Charlottesville, said Yackley, "employees should check with their local supervisors as to attendance today."

The decision was "to ensure the safety of our employees as well as our customers."

Yackley said "limited retail" will still be available and processing will still be in operation. Weather is expected to impact the flow of mail since planes and trucks are being hit hard by the blizzard.

Yackley said "most of the mail that was mailed yesterday does go out of the area by truck or plane, and we got that accomplished last night," before the storm hit.

Yackley anticipated that when delivery resumes, the backlog should be cleared "the next day because we'll have our operations people (working in the meantime) and it'll be all ready to go."
